Hmm, does that sample sound very familiar? I’m sure I’ve heard it somewhere before, like listening to LCD Soundsystem’s “Two” and wondering if that funky bassline is a reworking of the chorus from The Temptations’ “Can’t Get Next To You”. And just like there, it doesn’t seem to matter that something has been copied slightly, or sampled because Teengirl Fantasy have made darn sure that it doesn’t matter. Here, the sample is from Love Committee’s “Cheaters Never Win” and it fits amazingly well. Maybe I’d even go so far as to say it’s like a hand in a glove. That’s because Teengirl Fantasy don’t just take their samples and remix them like so many others, they take their samples and actually do something with them. Instead of feeling out of place, the sample fits right at home: think about the way Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse work so well together on Gnarls Barkley and you’ll realise what they’ve done. Lovely stuff. You just need to give it some time to kick in:
Big apologies for the lack of “The TV Week That Was” today: it’s been a bit of an odd week in telly, and the only shows of note were ones I’ve already talked about and I thought you might get bored if I waffled on about the same old shows time and time again. So hopefully it will return with more of a bang next week. I hope.
