Okay, it’s probably not the cheesiest byline ever but it’s certainly one of the worst I’ve heard in recent years. The particular offending line has been hanging around for a little while now, but I’ve only just had the relative guts to mock it a bit on the blog – after all, this particular film hasn’t even been released yet. We don’t know exactly when it will be either. But people know about it. It stars Michael Douglas, Shia LeBoeuf (or Shia The Beef as I like to call him) and Carey Mulligan. It’s a sequel.
Have you got it yet?
Smart suits. Lizards*! Okay, for those of your who haven’t got it yet, I’ll put you out of your misery. It’s only “Wall Street 2”! Wanna know what that offending byline is? It’s the laughable, chucklesome “Money Never Sleeps”. I have to say, I nearly killed myself laughing when I heard that for the very first time. After all, you couldn’t have come up with a more cheesy tagline. In fact, it’s not even a tagline, it’s an all-out title: “Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps”.
Now, we can’t criticise the movie yet since it’s not in cinemas but what I can say is that Oliver Stone’s timing is pretty good. The original Wall Street was released at a time of greed and prosperity, and now he’s made a sequel that is being released in the midst of an economic recession. So for good timing, Stone gets five stars. For his choice of title, he gets a three out of ten: could do better although brownie points for the laugh factor. You get the sneaky suspicion that you might be able to take this film a lot more seriously if somebody actually advised Stone not to use “Money Never Sleeps”. It kind of takes the serious edge off the film before it’s even being advertised on the telly.
Ahh…. We’ll just have to wait and see if the movie is actually as laughable as the title suggests. Or maybe this is all part of the grand masterplan: lower expectations, then you can never be disappointed.
* Er, the lizards thing was because Douglas is Gordon Gecko, a gecko is a kind of lizard… never mind…
